Good and Bad

Good news is I've officially finished and spray sealed 5 of my pictures ready for framing. Bad news is to get the picture framed it would cost $45 and that's without glass and shadow box (which would be around $80-$100). So I will have to look for other ways to get my work framed (or have it prepped to be sent out). $45 for framing would mean I'll have to up my price to over $100 when I planned to have it around $50-$80 (with a $10 frame if they exist).

So while my 'Early Morning' picture is getting framed with the $45 frame, I have begun testing using the cheap frame I got awhile ago at Officeworks. The idea is not to sell cheap frames but to have it look presentable for etsy, and the customers can get it framed according to what suits their home. The backing board is workable and can be used instead of mdf, after it is prepped with glue. I played with new designs last night using my last mdf and the preframed backing board. The funny thing is it didn't actually work out the way I imagined but is still a pretty cool look. I was thinking of making a textured surface to stencil on some running horses, but as I pulled the fabric a horse head appeared and I loved it so much I just couldn't ruin it. So I am going to see if I can still stencil over it or just paint it to look like a horse head.

I've also decided to close this blog for personal use, an online diary for myself, just like my animation blog. I'll open a new one called Crafting Movement so I can share final product information and interesting finds with others. This one just has too many notes and blabber to be interesting for anyone else.

One last thing... my work with Little Book for Dreamers has come to a halt (not because I dont want to do it, but because I got distracted). There is a third project and it's very much about 'crafting movement'. Basically it's a series of 4 mini wall mountable figures in sequence. Like an egg hatching, cat running or flower growing... So a mini sequence of something happening. This was actually the idea that started this blog, but I had wanted to do something a bit too complicated before (like sewing it on bags and clothes). For now, and what I'll be doing when I go home today, is drawing my designs onto cardboard and paper mache-ing it to stand a little bit away from the wall. We'll see how it works out, updates coming soon :)

Here is another great article about what should be included in a package when something is sold.

1. Branded Invoice
Don’t simply print a receipt from Etsy or Paypal. Instead, design a professional, branded invoice with your logo and fonts. Include details such as date, billing address, contents of the package sent and their price.

Bonus Points: When customers place an order on my retail site, they can check a box to indicate that the order is a gift. When they do this, we mail a gift invoice instead of a regular invoice. Our gift invoice does not include any pricing information and includes a note from the sender. Implement a similar feature on your website so gift recipients get a special invoice with their order.

2. Return Information
On your invoice, or someplace else in the package, you should reiterate your return policy and return instructions.

3. Contact Information
Provide customers a way to get in touch in case there is something wrong with the order. Include your website URL, your contact email address and, if possible, a customer service phone number.

4. Swag
Provide a little something extra that will surprise your customer, preferably something they will keep, like a pen or magnet, although samples may make sense too if you sell edibles, cosmetics or bath/body goods.

Yesterday I got the rare motivation to work on my animation homework after work (usually I leave it till the weekend as I need a change from working in animation all day). The motivation sparked from the ideas I got from the Q&A class I had earlier that day. It's looking pretty cool and I hope to give it a few days and really hone in on it and make it perfect (for blocking that is).

I'm still getting new ideas daily and it's' getting a bit overwhelming. I want to make so many things (I jot the ideas down, but it's hard to sketch out exactly what I see in my mind's eye). I wish I could photograph the images I see in my head so I wont forget any details. Anyway, I havent decided what I'm going to do tonight, but I will go through and put some pictures up of the fabric pictures. One amazing this happened though, I think my Arabesque picture is evolving... I was pretty down when I added the black shadows to my dancer and I thought I ruined it. Tuesday it looked the same, black and yucky. But yesterday it feels like the shadows have blended with the fabric and it's working again. So so weird, was there some chemical reaction? or have I adjusted to it and am now seeing it differently? Anyway, I feel like that picture is done. It's hit on the Love level and I love looking at it. Approved. Hehe, I'm kinda excited about sharing this with the public... I'm scared of course, what if people think I'm crazy. But I would really love to see how people react to it.

Progress report, I started on the Little Book for Dreamers last night, it's pretty fun putting all the elements together, but it's clear I need more photoshop skills.

I also decided to put all the Fabric Pictures I've done around the room and live in it for awhile. So far, I've decided that Early Morning, Still Life, Firebird and Solitude are done. The only other one is Arabesque, which needs a bit of a touchup. Oh, btw, the gold just makes me happy :) Might do it again tonight while I do either mentor homework or more LBFD...

I'm thinking it might be an idea to buy frames from IKEA in the future... These ones have 'wood based panels' for the backing and it might be just like the MDF I've been working with. And this one is extra deep for a shadowbox effect.

Time to move on...

Yesterday I did some painting but somehow it felt different, like I couldn't hold on to the excitement and inspiration I had the last couple of weeks. So I've decided to move on... leave the paintings for a few days (or weeks) and come back to it. It's really only 'Summers Day' and 'Water sleeves' that I'm having trouble with. I lay down one colour and I just cringe immediately, no idea why...

So today I'm going to jump on to Secret Project 2, which is Little Book for Dreamers... I did say I was going to reveal it one word at a time and I forgot about it about 2 weeks later oops, sorry. What is it? you'll see :) I've collected all the resources already so now it's a matter of putting it all together. Will give you some hints when I have something substantial to show.

oh and a little note to self: try doing some tiny ones, is that even possible?

Dreams

I'm dreaming about making skirts after seeing this tutorial by Amy Karol (from Angry Chicken). Actually I love the idea of sewing, I'd love to make some bags and pillows and skirts, but I don't own a sewing machine and the idea of sewing the whole thing by hand just puts me off. Oh well, I guess it's probably a good thing I dont own one just yet as I have way too many projects I wish to try already. I'll just keep on dreaming :)

Over the weekend I didn't get a chance to work on my Art as I was working on my Animation homework (and watch Avatar, which is awesome btw). I did make some nice discoveries on Friday, so I'll blog about that instead, tehehe, it is a craft blog after all...

After work we went to replenish my paint supply and I decided to try some metallic bronze paint. I didnt really know what I was going to do with it, it just looked pretty sitting there on the shelf in the shop. When I got home I tried it out, dry brushing it onto one of my Wip art (which I decided to call) 'Solitude' and it really surprised me! Such a simple glowing outline really gave the picture an atmospheric glow. The colour reminds me of Egyptian gold and the background felt even more quite and mysterious. I was tempted to do something with the extra space, like some bronze swirls or something but I decided against it when I looked at it from a distance. Simplicity and mystery is what this piece is all about. I love it, and it's fast becoming one of my favourites.

That's the thing I want to achieve, I want to feel a little bit of giddy happiness whenever I look at these pictures. Even though I plan to sell them, I still want to experience the feeling of ownership. Selling them would be like giving these pictures a stable home (instead of travelling along with a digital nomad like me).

I also tried the metallic paint on two other paintings. 'Firebird' which is the red figure on the black background, and 'Arabesque' which is the beautiful dancer with the mottle sunset background. The bronze metallic paint really worked on Firebird, and added the fire element. Firebird was the one I was unsure of as it had funny proportions and the black annoyed me. But after adding in the bronze/gold it looked beautiful, so I am going to deepen the black today and finish it off. The gold however didnt work as well on Arabesque which is kinda weird. I thought it would bring out the highlights in the skirt but for some reason it hid it instead. I'm still trying to work out what is wrong. Perhaps I should make the figure a darker shade to enhance the gold? Will have to try and work it out today.

Ooh, such a long post. Well those were my thoughts. I plan to finish painting ALL of my Art work today (I've already prepped 'Summers Day' which will be mostly white with colour peeping through, and then I'll work on 'Water sleeve' which needs a new colour scheme). Lots of work, but I need to get them done so I can start on Secret Project 2. Trying to get through my list of projects hehe. Photos will be uploaded soon.

Colours of the Wind

I can definitely say that this movie and song was a HUGE influence when I was a kid. It was around that time when I seriously thought about becoming an animator, and was (along with The Lion King) one of things I woke up at 5am in the morning every day to draw before school. I use to sing Colours of the Wind all the time and would have bought a Pocahontas costume to wear (but couldn't cos I was too little and none would fit me). I guess it gave me a taste for grace, power, colour, dance and nature, it has inspired me to dance. Thank you Disney.

Oh and another side note, I love this website, especially the layout and design. I wish I could take this course because I would love to know how to use my camera properly, or to it's fullest potential.

Secret Project 1

A compilation of my Art! The three big ones are the finished ones, the smaller ones are work in progress. Anyway, more on that later, want to note something first.

So here are some interesting notes I saw in an etsy email about item descriptions. Because it is an online marketplace, your customers cannot touch or feel the items you are selling so it's important to have detailed descriptions (and photos). The online article can be found here, but I thought I'd post it below so I won't ever lose it. I wish you could 'heart' an article like you would an item.

1. What is it? It may be totally obvious to you what the item is, but it might not be obvious to your customer.
2. What color is it? The color on your computer monitor may not be the same as mine.
3. How big is it? As a buyer I don't want to guess if that painting will fit over my fireplace or if those earrings are going to hang past my shoulders.
4. What is it made from? What materials and techniques are used?
5. How do I care for it? Can I wash and dry that wool sweater?
6. Who should buy it? or Who should NOT buy it? Is it appropriate for pregnant women? Children? Pets?
7. What is it used for? Is it decorative? Does it have a function? Both?
8. What does it feel like? Is that scarf soft to the touch? What's the texture like? Is that necklace very heavy?
9. How does it work? Does it slip over my head? Is there a clasp? Do I tie it around my waist?
10. Why is this one better than the one in the next shop? What special skills, materials, or ideas do you use that make your item the best?

11. Do I get everything in the picture? I see 12 items in your picture, do I get them all? Only one? Does that lovely bauble in the background come with it or is it just for display?
12. Will it fit me? When I shop in a brick and mortar shop I might try on 12 things and find only 1 that fits well. I am taking a BIG chance on buying clothes online. Please make it easier for me by offering extensive measurement and sizing information. Don't assume that your customer will know what you mean by "small" or "large."
13. What if it doesn't fit? Am I stuck with it? Will you exchange it? Who pays to ship it back?
14. Is it ready to use? Is that painting ready to hang? Do I need to frame it first?
15. How does it arrive? Is it gift wrapped? Is it ready to ship or is it made to order?
16. Will I get the EXACT item in the photo? Is it a stock photo or do I get the exact item?
17. Is it gonna stink? Does that vintage item have a funky, musty odor? Does the seller smoke while he creates that item?
18. How do I know it's "vintage"? What kind of research did you do to determine how old that item is? Is it marked? Is there a date on it? Are you experienced with vintage and antique items?
19. What do those fancy terms mean? Don't take for granted that your customer knows what a cabochon is or what giclee or gocco means.
20. Can I live without this item? Chances are your customer can easily live without your items. It's your job to SELL it to them. Let them know why owning this item is so wonderful. Are they going to feel like a princess with that lovely bracelet? Is that platter not only functional, but makes a wonderful work of art? Is that item the perfect gift for hard-to-buy-for people? Does the item evoke certain emotions? Tell us what's so great about it!

I've finished off some Art pieces and I really love them. Perhaps I'll hang them up at home for a bit before I set them free on Etsy. I am still wondering if I should add some highlights on the dancer, but the two nature ones I am pretty happy about. Because these were my first, the edges of the picture needs a bit of a touch up, so I'm considering offering them framed. I've also laid out the background paint for the next batch, I'm looking forward to completing them this Sunday.

Nearly there!

Yesterday I spent the evening painting :D sitting on the floor of my living room adding details here and there with the tv on in the background. My idea of a perfect after work activity. And the best news is I'm so close to finalising my first batch of Art. Today I will be doing the same and finish them off and then working on my next batch. My paint supplies are seriously depleted, I have no more white paint and I plan to paint one entirely white. Hopefully by week's end I'll have finished them all off ready for framing.

While my deadlines are there to inspire me to work harder, I do try to take them seriously. I noticed that I have a habit of dreaming up new projects and never get any of them done. Is that a normal crafty dilemma? Anyway, that's why I made the push to finish off the Art. I will, however, only list anything that I would personally like to keep, cos what better sign is there that something is working?

Almost time to start painting again :) feel like a little kid.

Oh and btw I got great feedback from my mentor. He said that all of my dialogue choices were good, they were not overused audio and they adapt well to different situations. Unlike everyone else who commented on my submission he said that my third dialogue piece is the one I should pick (which is pretty funny cos everyone, and I mean everyone, picked the first one with Daniel Jackson from Stargate). Anyway the ideas he gave me to use on the third piece (which came from Julie and Julia), is pretty awesome and I am really looking forward to getting stuck into the blocking tomorrow.

Oh my gosh, I've been admiring and drooling over the Whoopie Pies over at Little brown pen and today she posted the recipe! Thanks so much Nichole! I'm so going to make some this weekend.

Whoopie Pies (from Nicole from Little Brown Pen)

Cakes
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
2 tablespoons red food coloring
1 stick butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 large egg

Filling
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 ¼ cups confectioner sugar
2 cups marshmallow cream (fluff)
1 tsp vanilla

Make cakes: Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a bowl until combined. Blend buttermilk and vanilla in a separate small bowl. Set both aside.

In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar on highest mixer setting for about 3 minutes. Add egg and food coloring and mix until well combined. Reduce speed to low, and alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk/vanilla blend in batches, and mix until smooth.

Spoon 1/4-cup mounds of batter and place about 2 inches apart on a buttered baking sheet. Bake until tops are puffy, and spring back when touched, about 11 to 13 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Make filling: In a medium-sized bowl, beat together butter, confectioners sugar, marshmallow, and vanilla at medium speed until smooth.

Assemble pies: Spread a rounded tablespoon of filling on the flat side of one cake. Top with another. Makes about 8 cakes.

On another note, I assembled the stamps I bought over the weekend last night, and I love them! I got a bit over excited and pretty much messed up the front page of my sketchbook with childish stamping haha. Had so much fun. I'm tempted to spend tonight playing with them again, but I really must get on with my art pieces (which is fun as well). Really need to upload my photos soon...

Happy Valentines Day and Happy Chinese New Year everyone! What was your weekend like?

My Valentines Day and Chinese New Year was spent in Sydney. We went there to attend the Top Gear Live show, which was really exciting and filled with lots of explosions, lights and action. Jeremy Clarkson and James May were funny as ever and the Stig was there too. For someone who knows very little about cars, it was very entertaining. They had some races with vehicles made out of garden shed items (like a motorbike made out of two whipper snippers and I think part of a wheelbarrow), stunt driving which is always amazing, and a fire segment where they drove around on cars that were actually on fire. So much good fun, just as good as the tv show.

The rest of the weekend was pretty fun as well, though it rained the whole time which was a bit annoying. On Friday we arrived in Sydney and had a lovely dinner at the JAR restaurant (one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney). I had Chicken breasts stuffed with spinach and brie surrounded with yummy veges and drizzled with the most amazing dressing. drool....

Saturday we went for a wander around the city and Darling Harbour, and then had lunch at the Sydney Fish Markets (for about 20cm of really fresh salmon sashimi for $10, it's amazing value, definitely recommended). Then we went to the show and had dinner at Ichiban Boshi, comforting ramen.

On Sunday we met up with our dear friends from Sydney, I missed them so much. We met at Pancakes on the Rocks and caught up with their doings. Afterwards we headed to the Chinese New Year festival near Central station, sloshed around in the rain for a bit and then decided to get away from the muddiness and go to Chinatown. There I found a really great surprise (for my crafty side), I saw in one of the shops, some of the stamps I've been wanting to order, and they were cheaper too because there would be no currency conversion or shipping.



So happy, and so I bought two. Would have bought the whole lot, but that was when I realised I had used up the funds I put aside for my weekend. Oh well, really looking forward to using them tonight. Anyway, back to the weekend, we had lunch at a korean restaurant and then went to the airport to fly back home (which took a long time as the flight was delayed and there was trackwork for our journey home in Melbourne). All in all it was a wonderful weekend, made even better by the fact that I had finished my homework before I left. I shall share photos of the trip soon.

It turned out to be a hectic week. I thought going away for the weekend would be nice and easy, but I had not anticipated how hard the week leading up to it would be. As the weekend would be devoted to going out, I need to finish my homework beforehand. Which is fine except this week our assignment was to pick a new project to do and that is always hard. Plus we have to act and so last night I spent some time doing that and cringing at my silly acting job haha. I'm so not use to watching myself make facial expressions. Anyway, have to finish that tonight and pack as well... it's gonna be interesting.

Cool Stuff

This is turning out to be a bit of a scrapbook/notebook blog. The picture above is of printable fabric sheets from mixtapezine. Wouldn't it be cool to design something and print it out onto fabric to make into a bag or something cool? Love the idea. I've always wondered how I could do something like that and this is an easy, do at home, solution :)

Last night I tried my hands at digital scrapbooking, even though I was suppose to search for some audio to animate (just wasn't in the mood to look for good audio). It was fun, I used the free kits on Design House Digital to practice and I can see the popularity in it. It's a great way to learn about colour, design and layout.

Acting... eek!

I have another week of very limited crafting time, I'm not complaining, just stating the fact. I have to pick a new topic for my next Animation Mentor assignment which is pretty cool but this time it includes dialogue. We have to act again... Yikes! I am feeling a bit terrified about the idea, but that's what I've signed up for when I started the course. Better grin and bare it, hopefully it wont show in my video ref haha. What I've noticed is my acting looks turns out looking like me. It's a hurdle I have to overcome, what if in the future I have to animate an evil character and my audience thinks it's adorable or something (not that I'm adorable but I do like adorable things). Have to break the mould, I have to.

This coming weekend we'll be heading over to Sydney to watch the Top Gear Live show. Cant wait! Plus we'll be seeing a few of our Sydney friends whom I miss very much. So I better get this assignment done before then, and in the meantime I'll dream about crafting while I wait for next week. Oh and I hope the assignment I just finished goes down well. Would be nice to get a good mark, fingers crossed hehe. Gosh my mentor is tough! but that's exactly what I want. Wish I could get him to critique my body mechanics shots to see if I'm just bad at acting or he's really tough.

Passionfruit buttercake

Ingredients (serves 4)

• 125g butter, melted
• 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour, sifted
• 1/3 cup buttermilk
• 2 eggs, lightly beaten
• 220g (1 cup) caster sugar
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest
• 2 passionfruit, to serve
• 320g (2 cups) icing sugar, sifted, to serve

Method

1. Preheat oven to 175°C. Grease and line a 19 x 9cm loaf pan. Place the butter, flour, buttermilk, egg, sugar and lemon zest In a large bowl. Using hand beaters, mix until well combined.

2. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack. To serve, remove the pulp from the passionfruit and place in a small bowl. Add the icing sugar and stir to combine until the mixture forms a smooth paste. Drizzle passionfruit mixture over the cake. Cut into slices and serve.

Hue Test

I saw this colour hue test on a blog somewhere on the weekend and I thought I'd give it a go. My very quick attempt gave me a result of 57 or something horrendous. But today I gave it another go and my result was a perfect 0! yay! haha but I cheated and got Matt to help me look cos after awhile my eyes started blending the colours and confusing me :P I'm happy though, cos I did most of it by myself haha. Now my eyes hurt...

Today is very slow at work so I thought I'd blog about what I did last night. I was doing the second step in my Art project and putting the large piece of cloth onto the board, but I discovered this morning that I didnt use enough glue! The contours are all soft. So now I need to figure out how to strengthen the picture (I am determined to save every single one of my Artwork and make it work! it is about layers after all). Anyway, I better decide on the perfect glue to water ratio to avoid this in the future. I'm thinking about trying an abstract piece next... Lots of colour!

Tilt Shift

Matt introduced me to the world of Tilt Shift photography today. It's a camera technique where scenes in real life are made to look like miniatures and models. So very cool! The real thing is done by using a camera lens which tilt as it takes a photo (or that's the very quick explanation I got), the center of the image is in sharp focus and the colour contrast is turned up very high. This can also be achieved using photoshop. There are so many cool photos online, but here are some I found so far.

Packaging ideas

Another post today. There are just so many pictures that inspire me.

This one is from VioletGiftShop again. I'm in danger of spending too much money in that shop. But anyway, I love the look of the bottom left hand picture. Brown paper with string and tag.


Also from VioletGiftShop. The bottom photo is really nice, but I like the look of all 3 of them. Simple one shade stamping on brown paper, maybe even with a coloured bow.
This stamp is gorgeous, and I would love to have one when my shop is finally set up.
Basically I imagine stamping this on brown paper and leave it at that, or stamping this using the StazOn Ink on re purposed groceries bags which I have a million of (until I get use to bringing those eco bags to the shops). The second option would allow me to make a waterproof bag and so I can put the whole thing in a box and be satisfied knowing it'll be crush proof and waterproof. Anyway, I think I like dreaming up packaging ideas, which is jumping the gun a bit, but oh well, it's always fun to dream.

Happy

Had a lovely birthday weekend, it was nice and laid back, nothing too fancy and I was happy. The most amazing gift was when my goddaughter Bella called and she sang happy birthday to me! She is 3 years old. The cutest thing ever :) I loved all my gifts and my man took me shopping for a day and I'm wearing a cute dress we found together. We also went to dinner at TGI Fridays, which I thought was awesome fun haha. Matt was a bit confused by my choice as he wanted to take me somewhere fancy (well that's what he said) but I really did feel like something fun and American. Thanks everyone!

The next couple of weeks might be a bit difficult for me to find some time to craft (Matt's mum is coming to stay for a few days this week and we're off to Sydney for the Top Gear show the weekend after). But I really REALLY want to do something, so I will have to squeeze some time in somewhere. Fingers crossed I will get something done.

Anyway, some cool bedroom setups I spotted while on Poppytalk. I really love the tutu light, I will have to find some way to get one haha.
